Our patients aren't always aware of how much their choices and attitudes during their orthodontic treatment can affect the final outcome, how long it takes and their level of comfort during the process.
Your choices during orthodontic treatment will have a significant impact on how things turn out in the end.
The following are some things you can do that can have a positive impact on the outcome of your treatment:
Be Positive & Proactive
The braces process comes with its share of discomforts and frustrations, and most people aren't exactly thrilled to learn they need braces. That said, making the decision to take a positive approach to your treatment, and to do everything you possibly can to make it go smoothly, will do you a lot of good in the long run when it comes to achieving a positive outcome.
After all, the end result of this process will be the straight, beautiful, healthy smile you've always wanted!
Good Oral Hygiene
A proper and consistent oral hygiene routine is at the top of the list of things you can do to make sure your treatment goes well. It's also one facet of your treatment that you have total control over.
Braces have lots of little crevices that easily collect food particles and plaque. Letting this go without frequent and thorough cleaning will lead to discolouration of teeth, gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. In short, poor oral hygiene will make your orthodontic treatment process more uncomfortable, and can potentially prolong it as well.
So take extra care when cleaning your teeth, do it consistently, and take your time!
Attending Regular Appointments
Always attend your regularly scheduled appointments with your both your dentist and your orthodontist. This includes everything from adjustment appointments to regular check ups and cleanings!
If you have to reschedule an appointment, try to do so straight away, or as soon as you can. don't put it off; you’ll just wind up prolonging your treatment process.
Wearing & Caring for Your Orthodontic Appliances as Prescribed
When we tell you to only take your Invisalign aligners out when you eat, brush and floss, or when we tell you to wear your retainer full time, it’s not because we’re trying to make things hard on you! We want your treatment to be as efficient and effective as possible. If you aren't wearing your appliances as prescribed, or aren't following all care instructions carefully, your progress will only be slower in the end.
