Initial Exam & Consultation

Your first consultation with the Ridge Meadows Orthodontics team will include a thorough exam, a discussion of your dental history, and X-rays.

Based on this meeting, we will determine whether you require braces, and if so, what the most appropriate treatment is, and the potential duration of all stages of treatment.

Treatment Begins

Treatment phase details vary depending on the seriousness of the condition in question, and the type of treatment recommended (eg. Wire Braces vs. Invisalign®). Treatment duration commonly lasts anywhere from 8 to 48 months.

Regular Appointments & Adjustments

Once your wire braces are in place, regular adjustment appointments are necessary to adjust the elastic ties that hold the wires in the correct position.Without these adjustments, the wires couldn't create the necessary pressure to correct the dental issues.

With Invisalign®, a series of custom-made, clear aligners will be created specifically for you, which are typically changed every other week.

Adjustment appointments also give your orthodontist the opportunity to evaluate the movement of your teeth and the progress that is being made. This allows for recommendations that may improve the final outcome of the treatment plan.

It takes a minimum of three weeks for tooth movement to occur.

This means that adjustment appointments are typically made every 3 to 10 weeks. With the newer wires available today, however, adjustments may be required less often, since they tend to provide longer working ranges.

Living With Braces

When dental braces are in place, it is more important than ever to maintain proper oral hygiene and avoid certain types of food.

Removal of Wire Braces

When your treatment is finished, your dental braces will be removed with a simple and relatively painless process.

The bond between the brackets and your teeth will be safely and gently broken. When the bases of the brackets are squeezed, the adhesive bond releases, and the brackets are removed. During this process, the adhesive is left on the teeth to prevent damage to the enamel and tooth structure.

What's left of the bonding cement is removed once all brackets are removed. After that, your gums may be slightly inflamed, but this will most likely subside in a few days with good brushing and flossing.

Recovery & Aftercare

Retainers are removable orthodontic appliances that are necessary during the 'retention period' of orthodontic treatment when the teeth are still unstable. The retainer is made for specifically for your mouth, and your orthodontist will recommend whether you need to wear it full time or part time during the months after your braces have been removed.

At your next check up after the removal of your braces, your will receive a thorough oral cleaning and our team will remove any left-over adhesive from your teeth and the area where the braces were. At this point, teeth whitening also may be considered, since there may be a noticeable difference in colour between the places where the brackets were bonded and the rest of your teeth.
