Talking with Braces

Talking with Braces

One of the problems our patients at Ridge Meadows Orthodontics deal with when they first get their braces is trouble talking. These tips will help you get used to talking while wearing braces!

Don't feel embarrassed if you have a hard time speaking when your braces are first applied. This is actually an extremely common problem, so don't worry: with a little patience, and by following some of these steps, you’ll be talking like you normally do in no time.

1. Remember: this is temporary!

Your brackets, arch wires, or invisible aligners may feel strange at first, and make it difficult for your tongue and facial muscles to move the way they usually do when you speak. But remember that this is temporary, and your oral structures will adjust to these new feelings soon enough.

2. Learn about speech functions

Learning about how your whole body contributes to your ability to speak is very enlightening. And, it will also give you the tools and information you need to get back to speaking normally, faster.

3. Use Dental Wax

Some of our patients have noticed that using dental wax on their brackets allows them to speak more comfortably, since it provides a smoother surface, and more glide.

4. Consider self-ligating or lingual braces

Our patients who choose these lower profile braces tend to have a little less trouble talking at the start of treatment.

5. Practice makes perfect!

The most effective thing you can do to regain your normal speaking abilities is to practice! Some good ways to practice include:

  • singing
  • speaking or reading aloud
  • speech drills

You may also want to record yourself speaking, and then listen to the recording to catch your trouble areas. If you’re really having a hard time, practice speaking slowly and really enunciate each and every word.

If you’re having a hard time speaking with your braces, or if you need more tips and advice on the subject, please contact our team! We’d be glad to help.
