Why Shouldn't Children Use Invisalign?

Invisalign clear aligners are a great choice for teens and adults, because they're very convenient and nearly undetectable. They aren’t for everyone though, and children are typically better off with more traditional orthodontic treatment options for a variety of reasons.

Here at Ridge Meadows Orthodontics, we're sometimes asked why we don't prescribe Invisalign clear aligners for children. The parents asking are usually those of kids who are worried about how their braces will look, or of kids who may struggle to maintain sufficient oral hygiene with metal braces.

However, Invisalign isn't the right choice for young children for a few important reasons.

The main reason we don’t prescribe Invisalign for children is their age and maturity level. Because they are young, they just aren't as capable of being responsible with these removable aligners.

If they feel uncomfortable or sore, kids are more likely than adults to let frustration get to them and just take their aligners out.

This problematic for two of reasons. First and foremost, taking aligners out regularly or for extended periods of time can severely delay the progress of their treatment, and can even damage their teeth.

Although Invisalign aligners are removable, they are still meant to be worn full time and only removed to eat, or for brushing and flossing teeth. Anything more can impede or even reverse the progress being made.

Children are also somewhat more likely to lose or damage their aligners during play. When aligners are lost or damaged, it will slow down the progress of treatment.
