The Importance of Visiting the Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment

Over the course of your orthodontic treatment, you will be visiting your orthodontist on a regular basis for checkups and adjustments. But be sure to keep visiting your dentist too!

Whether you have braces or Invisalign, throughout your orthodontic treatment you'll be in your orthodontist’s office fairly frequently. Your orthodontist needs to check on your progress regularly to make sure that things are on track.

But it is also important to remember to continue visiting your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups throughout your orthodontic treatment. In fact, you may find that more visits that usual are helpful.

An orthodontist’s job is to straighten your teeth and give you a healthy, stable bite. They can’t do that if your oral health is compromised due to cavities or gum disease.

Wearing braces, or even Invisalign, can create more crevices on your teeth where food particles, plaque and debris can get stuck. For this reason, even people who are extremely diligent about brushing and flossing have an increased risk of developing cavities and gum disease during orthodontic treatment, so seeing a dentist regularly throughout your treatment is essential.

Your dentist will remove any excess plaque or tartar buildup, and prevent problems from occurring. If they do spot a problem developing, your dentist will be able to catch it early, keeping it from getting worse and helping to keep your orthodontic treatment on track.

Your dentist will tell you if extra visits during your orthodontic treatment are necessary, or whether you can continue visiting every six months as usual.
