Initial Exam & Consultation

Your first consultation with the myOrthodontist Maple Ridge team will include an exam, a discussion of your dental history, and X-rays.

Based on this meeting, we will determine whether you require treatment and, if so, what the most appropriate treatment is, and the potential duration of all stages of treatment.

Treatment Begins

Treatment phase details vary depending on the seriousness of the condition in question, and the type of treatment recommended (eg. Wire Braces or Invisalign). Treatment duration can last anywhere from 8 to 48 months and beyond.

Regular Appointments & Adjustments

Once your wire braces are in place, regular adjustment appointments are necessary to adjust the elastic ties that hold the wires in the correct position. Without these adjustments, the wires couldn't create the necessary pressure to move the positions of your teeth.

With Invisalign, a series of custom-made, clear aligners will be created for you, and which you will often change every other week.

Adjustment appointments also give your orthodontist the opportunity to evaluate the movement of your teeth and the progress that is being made. This allows for recommendations that may improve the final outcome of the treatment plan.

It can take at least three weeks for tooth movement to occur.

This means that adjustment appointments are typically made every 3 to 10 weeks. With the newer wires available today, however, adjustments may be required less often, since they tend to provide longer working ranges.

Living With Braces

When dental braces are in place, it is important to maintain proper oral hygiene and avoid certain types of food.

Removal of Wire Braces

When your treatment is finished, your dental braces will be removed.

The bond between the brackets and your teeth will be broken. When the bases of the brackets are squeezed, the adhesive bond releases and the brackets are removed. During this process, the adhesive is left on the teeth to help prevent damage to the enamel and tooth structure.

What's left of the bonding cement is removed once all brackets are removed. After that, your gums may be inflamed, but this will often subside in a few days with brushing and flossing.

Recovery & Aftercare

Retainers are removable orthodontic appliances that are used during the 'retention period' of orthodontic treatment when the teeth are still unstable. The retainer is made specifically for your mouth, and your orthodontist will recommend whether you need to wear it full time or part time during the time after your braces have been removed.

At your next check-up after the removal of your braces, you will receive an oral cleaning and our team will remove left-over adhesive from your teeth and the area where the braces were. At this point, teeth whitening also may be considered, since there may be a noticeable difference in colour between the places where the brackets were bonded and the rest of your teeth.
